Ms. Dawn Farmer

I have always enjoyed learning about history, through studying different periods of history we can gain some understanding of important developments that have shaped our present time and future. We can also get some fascinating insights into human nature, adaptability and resourcefulness. I moved to China in 2013 to teach and at the same time to learn more about the fascinating and ancient culture. In my first position, I was teaching English language at a public middle school for three years, this helped me to get familiar with Chinese students and I have been studying Chinese language and characters myself at this time. Since then, I have been teaching history to high school students in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. I also enjoyed opportunities to teach arts and craft as well as psychology as extra curricular activities and hosted several model UN events. In the school holidays I have traveled widely in China, my biggest achievement was in 2017 when I cycled from Kunming to Shangrila , the scenery was beautiful and it was an amazing experience to meet people from the different regions of Yunnan

06Course Overview and Design

This course will be an experimental learning environment where students will focus on skills in class and acquire information outside of class. This “flipped” class model will allow the course to cover more material at the same rate as its equivalent in an American high school classroom. Students will not only learn about the history of the United States and the modern world, but also develop vital academic skills for the future. Such skills include: independent study skills, academic writing, persuasive argumentation/debate, teamwork, and discussion. This class will focus on developing those skills through a number of activities that will help students become proficient in new learning styles commonly used in Western style classrooms.
