Ray Powell Ph.D. comes to us from The United States, he has been in the field of education for the past 21 years. After a few years as a University Professor he began a career as an instructor Teaching English as a foreign language. Of the 16 years teaching ESL to students from primary to the university level, the last 11 years have been teaching here in China. Dr. Powell specializes in teaching the University of Cambridge Language Assessment system. Dr. Powell is Cambridge certified to instruct the following programs; Young Learners, KEY, PET, FCE. CAE, IELTS, Training the Teacher, Grammar to Teachers. His lessons are a mixture of excitement, humor and creative thinking. When asked how he felt about teaching he replied, "It's the hardest job I've ever loved".

This course will focus on exposing students to a deeperlevel of understanding to literature, fiction/nonfiction, and academic writing. Over the course of the school year we will not only be covering different aspects ofLanguage Arts, but also reading fantastic books together. Students are expected to read and respond at an advance level to various types of literature,
independently, in group discussions, and in writing. All facets of language arts, listening, speaking, reading, and writing will be utilized. This course intends to place emphasis on critical thinking and analysis through language arts.

At the end of course, students should be able to:

• Conduct research on a topic, defend their positions critically, and cite correctly
• Confidently and proficiently use their English language skills for social and academic purposes
• Hold advanced language skills in drawing inferences, reasoning, reflections, and making implications
• Understand and properly utilize literary devices in their writing and speaking
