Ms. Dawn Farmer

Ms. Dawn Farmer have always enjoyed learning about history, through studying different periods of history we can gain some understanding of important developments that have shaped our present time and future. We can also get some fascinating insights into human nature, adaptability and resourcefulness. I moved to China in 2013 to teach and at the same time to learn more about the fascinating and ancient culture. In my first position, I was teaching English language at a public middle school for three years, this helped me to get familiar with Chinese students and I have been studying Chinese language and characters myself at this time. Since then, I have been teaching history to high school students in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. I also enjoyed opportunities to teach arts and craft as well as psychology as extra curricular activities and hosted several model UN events. In the school holidays I have traveled widely in China, my biggest achievement was in 2017 when I cycled from Kunming to Shangrila , the scenery was beautiful and it was an amazing experience to meet people from the different regions of Yunnan

06Course Description

The college board has decided to take the original AP World History exam and course and break it up into two courses. They are currently working on developing the AP World History: Ancient. In AP World History: Modern, students investigate significant events, individuals, developments, and processes from 1200 to the present. Students develop and use the same skills, practices, and methods employed by historians: analyzing primary and secondary sources; developing historical arguments; making historical connections; and utilizing reasoning about comparison, causation, and continuity and change over time. The course provides six themes that students explore throughout the course in order to make connections among historical developments in different times and places: humans and the environment, cultural developments and interactions, governance, economic systems, social interactions and organization, and technology and innovation.

07Course Syllabus

The purpose of the class is to provide a panoramic view of the history of mankind, since it has lived in organized society.

Beyond the general knowledge acquired, the students will develop skills that will help them critically read, analyze, and understand the historical events and trends, as well as understand the functioning of the current world.

Students will also be prepared to take the AP World History:Modern Exam.

08Course Design

AP World History:Modern is the study of the foundations of what we consider modern history and the connections between the old world and the modern world. It focuses on space (various societies around the world), time (the chronology the rise and fall of human societies from 500AD to modern day), systems of beliefs, and the interaction of these societies when they met each other at different times in history (through conquests, colonization and settlements, and trade).

AP World History:Modern is the analytical and comparative study of human societies and the systems they have put in place. Students will develop a thematic approach of various historical eras, learning to identify similar patterns and differences, in order to formulate and express a judgment through essays and class presentation. Students will therefore develop and acquire research, reading, analytical, and organizing skills. Simultaneously, the students will be prepared to take the AP World History:Modern exam. A prerequisite knowledge of World History is required prior taking the exam.
