At Cambridge Network, our Associate Regional Directors (ARDs) play a vital role in shaping the international student experience outside the classroom. This month, two ARD-led excursions offered students opportunities to challenge themselves, strengthen friendships, explore their communities, and create lasting memories. These activities not only provided fun afternoons but also supported student well-being, confidence-building, and cultural connection.
Climbing to New Heights at Morris Catholic
On Friday, November 14, an ARD gathered a group of students from Morris Catholic and headed to the Randolph Climbing Center for an afternoon of adventure. For all of the students, it was their first introduction to rock climbing — and the 30-foot walls were both exciting and intimidating.
After an initial safety briefing on harnesses, belay ropes, and climbing techniques, the students began their journey up the walls. What started as apprehension quickly transformed into determination and courage. Although the climbs were challenging, each student reached the top and rang the bell. Soon, friendly competition emerged as they climbed faster and with more confidence, each developing a unique style and taking well-deserved breaks in between.
Following the physical activity, the group stopped for a comforting meal at a local Chinese restaurant known for its authentic cuisine. With full plates and fuller stomachs, they made one final stop for ice cream — a nostalgic treat from previous outings. Tired but happy, the students returned home ready for a restful night after an exciting and meaningful afternoon.
Teamwork and Triumph at Ranney: An Escape Room Challenge
One week earlier, on Friday, November 7, students from Ranney joined an ARD and supporting staff for a fast-paced and collaborative escape room experience. Before committing to the activity, one student expressed hesitation, so the manager kindly allowed the group to preview the room to get comfortable. Staff also accommodated the group after learning that the students were English learners, ensuring the experience was welcoming and accessible.
With one hour on the clock, the team worked through a series of interconnected puzzles, clues, and physical tasks — all requiring communication, cooperation, and creative problem-solving. Some of the challenges could only be completed when everyone worked together in perfect sequence. With just five seconds to spare, the group successfully completed the final step and unlocked the exit, celebrating their shared accomplishment.
After the adrenaline and excitement, the students enjoyed a well-deserved dinner at a nearby Japanese restaurant, where they relaxed, shared stories, and recapped their favorite moments from the escape room.
